Awaroa Beach sits at the mouth of the Awaroa Inlet, a long tidal arm on the northern coast of Abel Tasman National Park at the top of New Zealand's South Island. It's a stretch of golden sand roughly 800 metres long, framed by native forest and a tidal flat that fills and drains twice a day — and it's best known as "the people's beach": in 2016, more than 33,500 ordinary New Zealanders bought it so it could never again be sold to a single private owner.
"Awaroa" comes from the Māori awa (river or channel) and roa (long) — "the long channel." The name matches exactly what you see from the sand: this isn't a closed bay but the entrance to a wide estuary that cuts deep into the park. Crossing the Awaroa Inlet on foot is only possible for about two hours either side of low tide, in daylight — there's no alternative route around the estuary, so trampers on the Abel Tasman Coast Track have to plan the crossing around the tide table.
Until 2016, a seven-hectare strip of beachfront opposite Awaroa was privately owned by Michael Spackman, who put it out to tender. Among the interested buyers were developers with plans for upmarket waterfront housing — alarming people who knew the beach as open ground for any New Zealander. Two Christchurch residents, Duane Major and Adam Gardner, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Givealittle under the hashtag #buythisbeachNZ. More than 33,500 people contributed, raising NZ$2 million. Partway through, economist Gareth Morgan offered an extra NZ$1 million in exchange for exclusive use by his family — a condition that prompted several backers to threaten to withdraw their pledges, forcing Morgan to drop it. The land was bought and handed to the Department of Conservation (DOC), which now manages the beach as public land inside the national park.
There's no easy road access: the route from Takaka is 31 km, and the last 12 km are unsealed and prone to flooding, so DOC doesn't recommend it as a main way in. Most visitors arrive on foot via the Abel Tasman Coast Track — the Bark Bay to Awaroa leg covers 13.5 km in about 4.5 hours, crossing the Bark Bay estuary, climbing through mānuka scrub over the Tonga Saddle, and dropping to Onetahuti Bay before reaching Awaroa — or by water taxi. For an overnight stay, DOC runs the Awaroa Hut and Awaroa Campsite, with bookings capped at two nights between October and April and five nights the rest of the year; for something more comfortable, the Awaroa Lodge sits right by the beach. Travellers who'd rather combine walking with a boat ride can book the water taxi and coastal walk to Anchorage, a popular way to shorten the trip without missing the best beaches along the way.
The area holds traces of settlement that predate the national park. The Hadfield family farmed land beside the estuary from 1863 and gifted it to DOC in 2006; the old farm clearing, now known as Hadfield Clearing, is regenerating naturally as wetland. Closer to the beach stood the old Awaroa School, closed in 1931 and burned down in 1969 — when it was found abandoned in 1961, lessons were still chalked on the blackboard and workbooks and pencils lay on the desks.
Practically speaking, there's no car park at Awaroa — the beach is reachable only on foot, by boat, or by floatplane — but public toilets are on site, and both restaurants and bars are a short walk away, mostly clustered around Awaroa Lodge. The sand is fine and golden, typical of the decomposed-granite beaches that give the Abel Tasman Coast Track its reputation.
