Awaroa Lodge

8.8 / 10 · 150 reviews Remote eco-lodge · restaurant, bar and pizzeria, 700 m from Awaroa Beach Updated June 2026

Awaroa Lodge sits on Awaroa Bay (Awa-iti), at the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park on New Zealand's South Island. The name "Awaroa" comes from te reo Māori — "awa" (river) and "roa" (long) — and refers to the long Awaroa Inlet the lodge sits beside.

Only reachable by boat, helicopter or on foot

There's no road to Awaroa Lodge. Most guests arrive by boat — operators including Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle, Wilson's Abel Tasman Experiences, Abel Tasman Aqua Taxi and Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures run the crossing from Marahau or Kaiteriteri, a roughly 1.5-hour trip. Scenic flights with Helicopters Nelson or GCH Aviation Nelson are another option, and it's possible to walk in via the Abel Tasman Coastal Track — a 3-4 day tramp from Marahau that requires arranging luggage transport in advance. Boat arrivals land on a ramp at Awaroa Beach, about 700 metres from the lodge — roughly a 20-minute walk along the sand; a 4WD buggy helps carry luggage up but doesn't carry guests.

Rooms and suites

The lodge has 26 rooms and suites across three categories. Standard/Standard Plus rooms have a king bed (some split to twin) with ensuite and balcony, for up to two guests. Family Rooms add a dining table, a larger bathroom, and queen and single beds in various configurations for up to six guests. The architecturally designed Superior Suites, built over the wetlands, have a king bed or twin singles, a walk-in shower and a private deck, for up to two guests. Rates run from around $176 a night.

Restaurant, spa and activities

Harakeke Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, drawing on the lodge's own organic garden, local seafood, and New Zealand beef and lamb; in summer an outdoor pizzeria also opens to day visitors, including Coastal Track trampers passing through. Awaroa Day Spa offers massage-focused treatments. The lodge's tour desk arranges kayaking, fishing, glow-worm viewing and stargazing, plus a popular walk to the Awaroa Wetlands. Guests continuing south through the park often look at the water taxi and coastal walk to Anchorage, which combines a boat leg with walking sections further down the park.
