North of Lisbon, Portugal's Silver Coast strings together three of the country's most recognisable stretches of coastline: the fishing town of Nazaré, the surfing peninsula of Peniche, and the shell-shaped bay of São Martinho do Porto. It's a stretch of Atlantic shoreline shaped by cliffs, dunes and villages that lived off fishing for centuries before tourism arrived — and where, at Nazaré, the ocean produces some of the biggest waves ever surfed.
Nazaré is made up of three neighbourhoods: Praia, down by the sea; Sítio, on top of the headland; and Pederneira, the oldest settlement, built in a defensive position against the Viking and pirate raids the coast suffered into the early 19th century. Praia and Sítio are connected by the Nazaré Funicular, which climbs the cliff to Sítio, home to the Nazaré Lighthouse, built into the walls of the old Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo. It's also from this headland that you look down on Praia do Norte, made famous by the Nazaré Canyon, an underwater trench that amplifies incoming Atlantic swell and has produced multiple big-wave world records: Garrett McNamara's 23.8 m ride in 2011, Rodrigo Koxa's 24.4 m in 2017, and Sebastian Steudtner's 26.2 m in 2020 — still the record. The roughest swell season runs from October to March. Visitors who'd rather ease into the ocean can book a surf lesson at Praia do Norte, aimed at beginners. Outside big-wave season, the town keeps its fishing identity alive in the traditional dress still occasionally worn by Nazaré's women — a headscarf and a flannel skirt embroidered in seven colours — and in the festivities honouring Our Lady of Nazaré each September 8.
About 38 km south of Nazaré as the crow flies, Peniche sits on a peninsula that was once an island, now linked to the mainland by a sand isthmus. The town has fished these waters since ancient times and hosts a stop on the World Surf League tour each year, the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, held on the fast, tubing waves of Supertubos, rated among Europe's best. At the tip of the peninsula stands Peniche Fortress, used as a political prison for opponents of the regime during Portugal's Estado Novo dictatorship. About 10 km offshore lie the Berlengas Islands, one of the world's first nature reserves, reachable by ferry over the summer months.
About 11 km from Nazaré, the bay at São Martinho do Porto is shaped like a scallop shell, the result of the geological separation of the Serra da Pescaria and Bouro hills. It connects to the Atlantic through an opening only a few metres wide, which keeps the bay's water unusually calm — why it's popular with families with young children and with sailors, windsurfers and kayakers looking for sheltered conditions. The village became a seaside resort from the late 19th century onward, drawing nobility and the bourgeoisie, and today still keeps two distinct areas: the lower district geared to tourism, and the traditional residential upper town.
The Silver Coast lies roughly 100 km north of Lisbon as the crow flies, within the Oeste subregion, which groups twelve municipalities between Alcobaça and Torres Vedras. Winter, from October to March, is big-wave season at Nazaré and draws growing crowds to the Sítio viewpoints — visitor numbers there rose from around 80,000 in 2015 to 174,000 in 2017. Summer is the natural season for São Martinho do Porto and Peniche's beaches, with warmer water and generally calmer seas away from the surf breaks. Inland, the region is also known for Rocha pears, Alcobaça apples and Óbidos and Alcobaça sour cherries, agricultural products that support the local economy alongside fishing and tourism.
