Hog Hollow Country Lodge sits on Askop Road in The Crags, about 18km east of Plettenberg Bay on South Africa's Garden Route. The property occupies a private nature reserve on the edge of indigenous forest, with views over the valley and the Tsitsikamma Mountains.
The lodge has 16 garden suites, each with a king bed or twin configuration, a private wooden deck, air conditioning, wi-fi, a hi-fi system and a stocked mini bar, plus a tea/coffee station with homemade biscuits. None of the suites have a television — instead, guests are given a traditional South African bedtime story each night. The décor leans on earthy tones and hand-crafted artefacts.
There are also 3 double-storey family suites designed for guests travelling with children aged 12 and under: the master bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom sits upstairs, while the children's sleeping area downstairs has a double sleeper couch and an extra ottoman. The bathroom is shared between parents and children, babysitting is available on request, and guests can use the main lodge's playroom. In the evening, the children's beds get a turn-down with milk and a gingerbread man, and toy boxes and beach equipment (buckets, spades, bodyboards) are provided. These suites have no fireplace.
Breakfast, described by guests as abundant and of good quality, is included in every stay. The restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, with dishes such as seafood and lamb curry, which can be enjoyed on the deck with mountain views. The Boma Deck, overlooking the Matjies River Gorge, has its own fireplace and bar and is the late-afternoon gathering spot; there's also a Pool Deck by the swimming pool with sun loungers, and a lounge area with binoculars for wildlife-watching — monkeys are regularly seen on the roofs and verandas, alongside birds such as loeries and orioles.
The area has more than 50 charted walking trails, and a short drive away are Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, Birds of Eden and an elephant sanctuary, plus the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, which is dedicated to wild cats. For adrenaline, Africanyon runs kloofing descents, there's a treetop canopy tour, and one of the world's highest bungy jumps is nearby at Bloukrans Bridge.
In Plettenberg Bay, also 18km from the lodge, there are whale- and dolphin-watching boat trips, walks across the Robberg Beach peninsula, Nelson's Cave — with more than 100,000 years of recorded human occupation — and Keurbooms River boat tours. On the other side of the region is Nature's Valley Beach. There's also golf (Goose Valley Golf Club and Plett Country Club), scuba diving, surf lessons, mountain biking through the forests, and craft and organic markets at the area's wine farms.
The lodge sits just off the N2, between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River. The reservations office is staffed Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.
