Nature’s Valley Beach

4.6 / 5 · 1 204 reviews Africa Updated June 2026

Nature's Valley Beach sits at the western end of the Otter Trail, the five-day hiking route that runs along the Garden Route coastline through Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa. The beach stretches out where the Groot River lagoon meets the Indian Ocean, inside the De Vasselot Nature Reserve, in the Bitou Local Municipality, Western Cape.

The valley was cut off from the rest of the coast by steep river gorges until 1880, when road engineer Thomas Bain completed the Grootrivier Pass. The small village that now serves visitors only took its current name in 1953.

There are, in effect, two beaches at Nature's Valley, about 2 km apart (a 5-minute drive, or a walk along the sand). The first sits at the Groot River mouth, where you can feel the clear difference between the warm lagoon water and the cold ocean water; the second — Nature's Valley Beach proper — has jagged rock outcrops alongside sandy stretches leading into the open sea. South African National Parks (SANParks) lists it as a good spot for surfing, swimming and sunbathing, though the ocean water can stay cold even in the southern-hemisphere summer.

For the 2025/26 season, Nature's Valley holds Blue Flag status, awarded by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) to beaches across the Bitou Municipality — an accreditation renewed annually against water-quality, safety and environmental-management criteria, so it's worth checking the current season's status before travelling.

Canoes can be hired from the SANParks-run De Vasselot Rest Camp to paddle the lagoon toward the river mouth — powerboats aren't permitted on the water at Nature's Valley, which keeps it quiet. The area is also the starting point for several day trails: the Kalanderkloof Trail (4.8 km, about 2.5 hours) climbs to a lookout over the valley; the Groot River Trail (6 km, about 2.5 hours) follows the final stretch of the Otter Trail; and the Salt River Mouth Trail (9 km, about 2.5 hours) runs alongside the Salt River, the only river in the Tsitsikamma region with no fish in it. For another Blue Flag beach in the same region, Robberg Beach, about 30 km south, pairs a marine nature reserve with coastal trails near Plettenberg Bay.

The village itself is tiny — a handful of streets, street parking by both beaches — and has just one restaurant, the Nature's Valley Restaurant and Pub, with a small trading store next door. There's no fuel station in the village; the nearest is at The Crags. By road, Nature's Valley is about 30 km from Plettenberg Bay and about 40 km from the Storms River Rest Camp, the two nearest landmarks along the N2. For accommodation before or after the Otter Trail, Hog Hollow Country Lodge, in The Crags, is a short drive away.

For a longer outing, the Salt River via Keurpad Trail (15.1 km, about 6 hours) links the Kalanderkloof route to the coast via a road crossing of the Salt River before looping back to Nature's Valley.

Nature's Valley is best known as the finish line for the Otter Trail — a roughly 41 to 45 km SANParks-managed route along the coast that takes five days and four nights in huts, starting at the Storms River mouth. For most other visitors, though, the beach works well as a day stop between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River, easily combined with one of the short hikes above.
