Andilana Beach

4.6 / 5 · 1 204 reviews Africa Updated June 2026

Andilana Beach sits at the northern tip of Nosy Be island, off Madagascar's north-west coast in the Mozambique Channel. It's one of the few beaches on the island shielded by an offshore coral reef, which keeps the water unusually calm and, at low tide, extremely shallow — a different character from the livelier beaches on the island's south side, such as Ambatoloaka Beach.

Tides and water temperature

The defining feature of Andilana is what happens at low tide: the sea retreats far enough to expose a sandbar that all but connects the beach to a rocky islet offshore, letting visitors walk much of the way out on foot. Recent visitor accounts describe this consistently, and several note that the shallow water here warms unusually fast — reportedly reaching 34-35°C during the warmest months, between December and March. Snorkelling is possible near the reef ringing the islet, though it's worth noting that a number of visitors report seeing little marine life close to the main sand strip itself, unlike the water nearer the reef barrier. It's also common to be approached by local vendors on the sand selling handicrafts, fruit or informal services such as massages and hair braiding — generally friendly, occasionally persistent.

Where to stay and eat

The beach is anchored by VOI Andilana Beach Resort, which alone occupies more than 800 metres of white sand across two coves (per the resort's own listing), alongside a handful of smaller hotels. Dining nearby is modest but sufficient — The Pily Pily Restaurant, the Ravinala (inside the VOI resort) and Cacao Beach by Loulou are all a short walk away. Note that the stretch of sand directly in front of the resorts is managed as private beach for guests, though most of the bay remains publicly accessible. Travellers after more restaurants and nightlife will find both in Ambatoloaka, home to the Villa Les Orchidées guesthouse, about 20 km south along a road that has recently been resurfaced.

Getting there

Nosy Be is served by Fascene Airport (IATA: NOS), with flights from Air Madagascar, Air Austral, Airlink and Ethiopian Airlines, plus seasonal service from Italy's Neos. From Andilana, the airport is roughly 21 km away, a distance confirmed by the beachfront resort itself. Travellers arriving via mainland Madagascar typically cross to the island by speedboat from Ankify port to Hell-Ville (Andoany), a roughly 45-minute crossing, before continuing overland to Andilana.

Nearby and best time to visit

Worth the detour: the Nosy Tanikely marine reserve, popular for snorkelling; Lokobe Nature Reserve; and the crater lakes around Mont Passot, in the island's volcanic interior. Nosy Be has a tropical savanna climate, with a wet season running October to May and a shorter dry season from June to September; daytime temperatures stay fairly steady year-round at around 30°C even in the dry months. Visitors chasing the warmest sea water should aim for December to March, keeping in mind this also coincides with the wettest weeks of the year.

Frequently asked questions

When is the low-tide sandbar visible?

Only around low tide, and the exact window shifts daily — check a local tide table before planning the walk out to the islet.

How far is Fascene Airport?

About 21 km, per the beachfront resort's own published distance; a taxi ride typically takes 30-40 minutes.

Is the sea always warm at Andilana?

Multiple visitor accounts describe the water reaching 34-35°C at low tide between December and March; temperatures are naturally cooler outside that window.

Can I walk the whole beach?

Most of the bay is publicly accessible, but the stretch directly in front of the resorts is managed as private beach for guests.
