Ambatoloaka Beach

4.4 / 5 · 1 204 reviews Africa Updated June 2026

Ambatoloaka is a fokontany — a Malagasy administrative subdivision — within the commune of Nosy Be, in the Antsiranana II district of the Diana region, on the southwest coast of Nosy Be island, off Madagascar's northwest coast. The village gives its name to a sheltered bay of pale sand, protected by a coral reef a short distance offshore, roughly 7 km southwest of Hell-Ville (Andoany), the island's main port and administrative hub.

Unlike some of Nosy Be's quieter beaches, Ambatoloaka — together with neighbouring Madirokely — is the island's main hub of activity: it's where most of the beachfront bars and restaurants cluster, including Tatie Chris, a beach bar known for its weekly Sunday party that runs from noon until late. One independent travel guide describes Ambatoloaka's vibe as a "party sprawl," in contrast with Andilana, further north on the same west coast, which the same guide calls "cleaner, calmer and... more sanitized."

Shielded by the offshore reef, the bay's water is typically calm — better suited to swimming, floating and near-shore snorkelling than surfing. Coral reefs around Nosy Be as a whole have come under pressure from urbanisation, sugar-industry discharge and unregulated tourism, so reef condition can vary from one stretch of coast to the next.

Most visitors arrive via Fascene Airport (NOS), about 15 km away, with taxis available to any point on the island. Travellers coming from the mainland typically take the speedboat between Ankify port and Hell-Ville (around 45 minutes, ~20,000 Ar), followed by a taxi-brousse (from ~2,000 Ar per person) to Ambatoloaka. Accommodation outside Hell-Ville tends to cost more than on the mainland — in some cases up to twice as much — but the village has a varied choice near the water, including the hillside Villa Les Orchidées, about 250 m from the beach.

The climate follows the same pattern as the rest of the island: a wet season from October to early May, a dry season through September, and daytime temperatures around 30°C year-round — making the dry season the more predictable window to visit. Nosy Be's economy runs mainly on tourism and ylang-ylang cultivation for essential oils, and the island is now considered Madagascar's most developed tourist destination.
