Not all sand is equal — and sometimes the difference isn't about tourism, it's about geology. Away from the usual "golden sand, blue water" formula, there are real beaches around the world whose colour comes directly from very different natural processes: microscopic organisms, volcanic rock or near-pure silica. Here are three verified examples, one on each continent, with the science behind each colour — and, in one case, a safety warning worth taking seriously before you pack.
On Crete's south-western tip in Greece, Elafonissi Beach occupies a small islet of roughly 1.5 km², separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon — on calm days it's possible to wade across on foot, no boat required. The sand's pink tint, most visible near the waterline, comes from deposits of pigmented microorganisms living in a symbiotic relationship with the seagrass beds nearby, washed onto the beach by tides and waves.
The islet is now a protected nature reserve, administered by the municipality of Kissamos within the Chania regional unit, and is uninhabited. Two memorials near the beach mark tragic episodes from local history: a plaque commemorating an 1824 Easter massacre during the Greek War of Independence, and a wooden cross honouring 38 people who died in a shipwreck in 1907.
On the other side of the North Atlantic, near the village of Vík í Mýrdal in southern Iceland, Reynisfjara is a black-sand beach formed from volcanic basalt, part of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. It's known for the hexagonal basalt columns of Hálsanefshellir cave and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore, visible alongside the Eyjafjallajökull volcano on clear days.
But Reynisfjara also has a well-documented reputation for danger: so-called "sneaker waves" — waves that surge much further inland than the ones before them, without warning — are generated by the convergence of swell trains over a submerged offshore ledge. Between 2007 and 2024, the beach recorded at least twelve emergency rescues and five fatalities; a sixth death was confirmed in August 2025. Icelandic authorities responded with multilingual warning signs, a real-time wave-forecasting system with warning lights, and condition-dependent safety zones — the cave and basalt columns close to the public during red-alert conditions. In February 2026, strong swells combined with easterly winds caused significant coastal erosion and the collapse of part of the basalt columns, a reminder that the landscape is still active and still changing.
In the Whitsunday Islands off the Queensland coast, Whitehaven Beach stretches for seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island. Its sand is around 98% pure silica — a mineral not found in the local rock, so its origin is attributed to transport by ocean currents over millions of years. Because the sand is so fine and pure, it retains far less heat from the sun than ordinary sand, making it comfortable to walk on barefoot even on hot days.
The beach sits within a national park, with camping facilities run by Australia's park services, and received a AU$3.9 million infrastructure investment in 2018, including new walking tracks. There's no direct road access: it's reached by boat, seaplane or helicopter, usually from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island.
None of these colours is decorative. Each is the direct result of processes that are still active — biological in Crete, volcanic and erosive in Iceland, sedimentary in Australia — and that will keep shaping these beaches long after any visit. For travellers heading out to see them, the practical advice changes with the destination: at Elafonissi and Whitehaven, the main concern is environmental, since both are protected areas where sand, shells and organisms shouldn't be removed; at Reynisfjara, it's mostly a matter of personal safety — the rule Icelandic authorities repeat most is simple: never turn your back on the sea.
