Maranhão Coast has 19 catalogued beaches. White dunes with freshwater lagoons at the Lençóis Maranhenses and tide-driven beaches near São Luís, where the Preguiças river meets the sea.
High season runs from July to mid-September. Outside it prices fall 30 to 50 per cent and most access points, restaurants and local transport keep running.
